Shades of black

Updated: Aug 6, 2022

Dark and lovely cannot exist simultaneously,

Its either you are dark or you are lovely!

For your "dark" is a shade of black that is dark,

And that's just not lovely!

Its where being born black bares the feeling of being a burden,

Cursed to never understand the true meaning of self-worth,

"Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder"

So you pluck out those lying eyes with shards of self loathe and low self esteem

Only this time it’s in high volumes,

Pitying your own existence up until you cease to exist,

Invisible even to your own conscience,

Always made to feel like you are never enough

You surrender your dark soul to the green eyed monster

Which persuades you that

Only when you add a little bit of light

On your melanin soaked skin

Will you become lovely

So you work out the math and apply the science,

Colour 1,2,3 and 4,

A number for a different shade,

Working on your body like art,

With the aim of becoming a mosaic of elegance and excellence

With every pill you ingest and needle you pierce through your skin,

You tell yourself "beauty is pain"

Only to resurface as the ungodly product of lack of love and appreciation

A beauty in pain

No matter how light you become you are still you, drenched in darkness,

Your "dark" can never be synonymous with lovely,

Only with a little bit of light

Not to your skin but to your person

Can you truly become lovely,

Your "dark" is not a colour,

But a shade of black that is dark

And that's just not lovely.
